How to find the right golf instructor

How do you know when you have found the right golf instructor?

  • Does your golf swing look like a pro's?
  • Are you hitting your driver over 350 yards?
  • Are you hitting your sand wedge over 150 yards?
  • Do you have "custom fit" set of golf clubs that cost you a vacation or two?
  • Did you buy the latest technology in all your clubs?
  • Have you bought a dozen new golf balls that "seemingly" go farther?
  • Have you spent thousand of $$$ on lessons?
  • Is your driver the biggest one made that is legal?
  • Did you recently re-shaft your clubs with "make it go straighter and longer" shafts?

Or are you shooting lower golf scores?

The golf industry has a plenty of golf instructors who think they know how to teach golf. The golf industry also has numerous companies who have to meet their monthly quotas in golf lesson revenue (those infamous golf schools).

As golfers of all levels, we can be mislead into believing that a golf instructor will make our game better. A golf instructor can help you, just like club fitting can help you. However, a golf instructor, a custom set of clubs, or the latest technology is not always the solution. Remember, it is the student who will make the golf instructor a good one or great one. Only the golfer makes himself or herself a good or great golfer! In other words, the golf instructor does not swing the club for you, you do!

The golf instructor can coach you. Can guide you. That is good! Also, a golf instructor can educate you about your golf swing and what research has proven to be effective. That is good!

The bottom line is that the more you practice the right things to improve your golf game, the better your golf game will be (and the better the golf instructor will be).

Here are some qualifications that will assist you in finding the right golf instructor:

  • an education in more than golf
  • continuing education in the golf industry
  • good communication skills
  • good personality and attitude
  • has patience
  • knows the universal basics
  • video/camera equipment to show you your swing/your needs
  • a good player shown by their ability to demonstrate the right techniques (most people would rather "watch" than listen --- seeing is believing)
  • has the ability to teach right-handed or left-handed
  • uses their experience and knowledge to find out what is right for you according to your abilities and desires
  • good clean appearance --- the respectful presence of a golf instructor can bring discipline to the golf lesson, especially with children
  • gets results

It might take you a little time to find the right golf instructor. However, you shouldn't have to spend a lot of money in doing so.

Moreover, practicing the right techniques will give you the path for

"Golf for a Lifetime"

Best regards, Jeff Sherrill
